GameStart 2015 – Southeast Asia’s premier gaming convention returns, bigger and better than before

What’s new this year:

  •  GameStart 2015 Official Game - retro-style mobile game featuring mascot Alyse
  •  Double the floor space of last year’s event
  •  New B2B Day – industry conference “Gaming in Asia – Trends & Insights”

Asia’s premier gaming convention GameStart will be back for the second
year from 13 to 15 November at Suntec Convention Centre Halls 401 and 402. Last year’s event
attracted over 12,000 visitors from around the region, and this year’s is all set to be even bigger and
better.

Besides a massive line-up of the newest and hottest games, the event is once again host to the Capcom
Pro Tour Asia Finals, which will see the top Street Fighter players from Asia fight for a qualifying place
in the global Capcom Cup tournament at the end of the year. GameStart 2015’s FIFA tournament will
feature bigger prizes and the addition of qualifier events in Singapore and Malaysia. Also making its
return is the Game On! Cosplay Competition, and more information, including the identities of
GameStart 2015’s two celebrity guest cosplayers will be revealed in the coming weeks.
“The response to last year’s show completely blew our expectations,” said Elicia Lee, Director of
Eliphant Pte Ltd, which organises the event. “We knew that there was a gap in the market for a
consumer gaming event, but we didn’t quite expect the turnout and it was great to see the wide range
of attendees. Besides the gamers, there were also tourists and families which was really fantastic. It
just proves that gaming is no longer a niche activity, but one that everyone can get into.”
GameStart 2015 will occupy double the floor space, and be held over three days instead of two, with
the addition of a B2B session on 13 November, and a one day conference for knowledge sharing and
networking. Called ‘Gaming in Asia – Insights and Trends’, the conference will cover a range of topics
from game marketing strategies to IP protection. More information will be revealed in the coming
weeks.

GameStart 2015 launches its official mobile game

In line with its objective of showcasing local talent, GameStart Asia has collaborated with Seow ‘Sonic’
Zong Hui, developer of Street Fighter vs MegaMan, to develop its own mobile game, a first for an Asian
gaming convention. The retro-style platformer features GameStart resident gamer girl and mascot
Alyse battling increasingly challenging enemies in a bid to defeat a mysterious enemy, and along the
way unlocks other playable characters, each with their own unique powers.

“The team at GameStart is very big on supporting and promoting local talent, and many of us grew up playing what is now considered to be retro games. We worked with independent local developers and designers to create a fun yet challenging game that brought back a lot of fond memories for us,” said Ms Lee. Players can look out for in-game cameos by characters from games by Witching Hour Studios and Daylight Studios, as well as well-known personalities such as pro eSports player, Ho Kun Xian (“Xian”). Additional game content will be released in September and October 2015, and a special level unveiled at GameStart 2015, where show attendees can take up the challenge and stand to win prizes. The game is available on the App Store and Google Play from today, completely free to download and play. More info at http://gamestart.asia/the-game

Some of the exhibitors that have confirmed attendance at the show include Sony Computer Entertainment Inc and Taipei Game Show, and the show’s indie section, ‘Founders Base’, is filling up fast with game startups, artists and independent game studios from Singapore, Barcelona and Hong Kong. A special Early Bird rate for exhibitors is available from now till 31 August. Interested parties can email elicia@gamestart.asia. Sales of Early Bird tickets to the event will begin in early September, and Xmashed Gear will launch a Limited Edition GS2015 tee design, exclusively available with tickets sold online.

GameStart 2015 is pleased to announce the Official Partners for this year’s show: GameStart 2015 Official Partners

For overseas visitors, GameStart Asia is working with Official Accommodation Partners to offer special convention rates to GameStart 2015 attendees. Accommodation details and rates will be available on the GameStart Asia website from 25 August 2015.

Just few hours, Google annouced the 2 new Nexus phones. The Smaller 5x will be made by LG and its bigger Sibling the 6P will be made by Huawei. The DXOmark mobile for the Nexus 6P have centianly caught my eye. Being a blogger like myself having a good camera on our mobile phones is certainly an added advantage. We will take a deeper Dive into the Nexus 6P here.

Specs at a glance and key features:

    Screengrab from Huawei website

As of all Nexus Devices launches, The phone will be the the first to feature a Pure, no bells and whistles latest version of Android, for this case is Android Marshmellow, future versions of
Android will be readily available as well. The best part? The Android in Nexus devices is pure so
manfacturer's bloatware won't exist in this eco system. The phone will also feature the brand new Reversible USB type-C port, No more fumbling with it,

It's Rear Camera has 12.3 Megapixel sensor(IMX377) Made by Sony, 1.53um pixels, aperture of f/2.0 with laser autofocus and dual tone LED flash in a tow. The front has got 8 Megapixel shooter. Update: Check out former Android Enginner Romain Guy's sample shots from the phone below, do note that some minor post processing have been done but the shots are still impressive!

    Estimated Pricing and Availability

The phone launches today State side on Google store. The Global launch of the phone is not ready yet at the time of publication but seemly for the first time for google, There is a Exclusive gold option for the Japanese market (argggggh i want this!!!! =( ).

We don't know the global prices yet but according this Android Central article, this is what it will look like:

    Country (Currency)-[32GB,64GB,128GB]
    U.S ($)-[499,549,649]

For the local price in SGD i am guessing its not too far off (Numerical wise) from what aussies are paying in AUD based on the current exchange rates, but don't qoute me on that just use it as a rough gauge. Also we don't know excatly what options do we have here. but if you are intrested like me, i suggest you keep your eye glued to Huawei Singapore Facbebook page

A friend loan me the Oppo R7 to play with around this time in June. First impression of the phone is the decent build quality. The Oppo R7 is a "Premium" Mid range phone priced at SGD 569 without contract.

    Specs at a glance

    • ColorOS 2.1i, Android 4.4.4
    • Processor: Qualcomm MSM8939 Octa-core, Snapdragon 615
    • Ram: 3 GB
    • Rom: 16 GB
    • microSD slot: Yes
    • Battery 2320 mAh Li-Po Battery
    • Rear Camera: 13-megapixel Samsung 3M2 with ISOCELL technology
    • Screen: 5 inches AMOLED, 16 million colors, 1080P

General Performance and Observations (Day to Day usage)

Overall the phone is pretty snappy with its 3GB ram, Multi-tasking is a smooth affair switching between apps easily without lag. The Snapdragon 615 is pretty quick as well, infact this phone seems to be on par with another phone of my wirh Snapdragon 800 and 2GB of RAM.

The ColorOS is pretty well optimized performance wise, the interface however is the least of my liking, it feels very iOS. The Stock launcher on my set have been replace with Nova launcher just like every of my devices.

The Screen has got good viewing angel and visiblity under the bright sun is good. Being an AMOLED screen the colors are indeed vibrant, but it isn't overwhelming, Earlier generations of AMOLED screen tend to be overstaturated, but the one on the OPPO R7 is fine.

The 2320mah Battery isn't huge by today's Standard, but overall the battery life is very decent.

    Benchmarks

    VOOC Quick charge

OPPO has opt for thier own Quick charging technology in place of Qualcomm's very own quick charge 2.0. As you can see from the screenshots above, within a span of 6 mins battery level has gone up by an impressive 10%. This is by far the quickest charging phone i have ever come across, however being propriety means that you can only archive this using Oppo's own adapter and powerbank.

As a blogger and photography enthusiast, having a mobile device with a good camera is always an added advantge. Overall i am very impress with OPPO R7's imaging quality. The Raw format that the phone shoot is .DNG which is a standard format that can be easily exported into popualr post processing softwares to do post processing. Intrestingly, OPPO decided to opt for a Sumsung ISOCELL sensor on the R7 then the conventional Sony sensor that everyone seems to be using now.

paired with top of the line specs, the OS feels snappy even with several apps running in the background.

    Antutu
    3Dmark icestorm

    3Dmark Slingshot

By now benchmarks score would have flooded the review sites and forums, so i will just leave mine here for reference. Mobile gaming on a daily basis was a lag free affair.

The battery life from my usage

I am quite attached to my phone, clocking almost 4 hours of active screen on time on my device at Max brightness of the screen, in all the phone manages almost 12 hours of usage
i would say that while its not amazing, the overall performance is very decent.

The Supplied adapter is capable of delivering 5V@3A which is 15W.  Amphere app reported 2.55A max.

It took around 2 hours for the phone to be fully charged up from a flat battrey

The supplied charger is able to supply up to 5V 3A, while a app based amp meter reported a maxium current of 2.55A.

Theortically at 3A or 3000 mA the phone should go from a flat to full charged in 1.15 hours(Using 3450/3000 & assuming 100% efficency.) However one have to consider the fact that there is always:
    • The real world effiency lost
    • The several elements which uses the battery as it charges up though its minimal.
    • The occasional usage of phone while charging
    • The controller which trottles the charge rate to keep the health of the battery in the long run.
    • The same controller trottling the charge rate to keep battery from overheating.

Charging the phone with the supplied C to C cable and adapter took around 2 hours(Do note that i flat out the battery till the phone shut off, plug in the cable and it took about a minute before i was able to power on for a screen shot and it was shown to have 3%.)

Colors are vibrant on the 5.7 inches AMOLED but not oversaturated

Screen still look brilliant in outdoors

With QHD Resolution Text look sharp on screen.

Viewing angle is more than sufficent

The Screen on the Nexus 6P is amzing, being AMOLED the colors are vibrant but it ain't oversaturated. Screen manages well under sunlight and the viewing angle is more than sufficent.
Color reproduction IMO is a wee bit warmer on my set but i am comparing it with my U2412M, so you could say that i am nitpicking here. I would still say the color on my Nexus6P is accurate overall.
Nexus 6P is my very first phone with QHD resolution, while i would say for mobile devices QHD is more of a "Want" then a "Need", one would certainly appreciate the extra sharpness of the text when reading articles or forums.

       Shot with #huaweinexus6P
    My Keycaps shot with #huaweinexus6P
Old hill street police station which now  houses the MICA. Taken with #huaweinexus6P
Shot taken with the Nexus 6P camera.

If you have been following my blog, you would have known that the high DXOmobile Score reported was the most enticing thing for me on the Nexus 6P, having own a set now and taking picture with it myself, i would say that it never dissapiont me at all. Low light performace is pretty impressive for a mobile phone. Auto Focus aided by the laser is really quick.  There is enough details and sharpness. You may find the image gallery after the break for high res images that are taken using the phone. Below it is a 4K video taken with the phone as well.

In conculsion, I am certainly loving this 1st ever Phablet of mine, Will I reccomand to get this phone ? That's definitely a yes.  Tempted? Wait no more Visit http://www.lazada.sg/nexus-6p/ to get your
phone now 64GB is retailing at $949 and 128GB is retailing at $1049, Both come with a free jelly case and in-ear earphones. Stocks are very limited the phones fell short of supply during the pre-order period!

But it wasn't until we had a full size BB-8 and several members of the 501st descend upon our booth on Sunday, that we realised that in some way, every attendee at GameStart came together to help celebrate a love for video games and pop culture. Capcom Pro Tour Asia Finals

eSports played a more significant role in this year’s event, a reflection of its status as a fast-growing

industry. The SEA Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void Beta Anniversary Tournament Grand Finals saw
Blysk from Singapore beat EnDerr from the Philippines in a thrilling finale, and on Sunday, Korean
Street Fighter player Poongko emerged victorious at the Capcom Pro Tour Asia Finals, with a large
and enthusiastic crowd cheering him on. The Xtr3me3 Champions Cup 2015 was by the far the biggest FIFA tournament in South East Asia to date.

“The turnout was very strong and it was good to see everyone working hard and determined to
win the grand prize of $2000. FIFA is a soccer game, an international
sport watched by people all around the world, and we want to show the world that virtual soccer is
as fun and as tough as reality soccer."  -Phirkhan aka Xtr3me3

Many waiting to try their hands at games such as Just Cause 3 and Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm.

"GameStart is a success once again and we are really satisfied and pleased with the result the show
has achieved. Alone we can achieve so little, together we can do so much. We hope to see more

Neo Tokyo Project'sDoujin Market (Doujima) returns this year - bigger, better and bolder, with anew venue and fresh content that showcases the very best in illustration and derivative fan content.

Taking place on 7th and 8th May at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, the show will feature some 90 arts groups, over 100 youth artists from Singapore and around the region, a dedicated Visual NovelHub, seminars, as well as networking opportunities for aspiring creators.

“Interest in Doujima has exploded since our first iteration at *SCAPE in 2014,” said Jason Koh, Account Director of Neo Tokyo Project. “Moving to Suntec is the logical choice as it allows us to provide an even bigger, better equipped and more visible platform for creators to showcase their works.”This year, Doujima is supported by Noise Movement, an initiative of the National Arts Council which provides seed funding to ground-up programs to catalyze arts creation, participation and appreciation among young people.

The event is also recognized by the International Otaku Events Association (IOEA) of Japan as a premier exhibition in Singapore.Since 2014, the number of exhibiting circles has grown threefold and visitors can expect artists from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines and the United States, as well as homegrown collectives like Collateral Damage Studios, Daiyaku and FantaisieNocturne Productions at Doujima.

The Visual Novel Hub, the first of its kind here, will also feature local and international titles by independent game developers. It is presented by Afterthought Studios, the creators of Singapore's first successfully-Kickstarted visual novel - 'A More Beautiful World'.“Visual novels are a compelling new way of storytelling. I hope to pave the way for aspiring creators to get their start in this growing industry,” said Darren Kwok, Director of Afterthought Studios.

“I'm certain that with both community and top-down support, we will see more and more independent titles being published in Singapore.”As part of Doujima's ongoing efforts to spur youth entrepreneurship in the arts and inspire budding artists to create, visitors can look forward to a series of seminars by industry professionals on drawing, marketing and self-publishing.

While Doujima is not a cosplay event, cosplayers and pop-culture fans are welcome to get in on the act, with a dedicated chillout zone and refreshing soda from Official Beverage Gabu Gabu. “We at Neo Tokyo Project are committed to forging new avenues for artistic expression,” said Jason. “We hope that this year's programs will engage, excite and empower the community to greater heights.” he added. Doujin Market 2016 will take place at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre, at The Crescent (L2) on 7th and 8th May. Doors open from 11 am to 7 pm daily. Admission is FREE.
